[52] Tree Troubles? Spotting Common Tree Diseases in SW Missouri – Part 2

Bacterial Diseases:

  • Fire Blight: This bacterial disease primarily affects flowering trees like apple, crabapple, and pear trees. Sudden wilting, browning, and blackening of shoots, leaves, and flowers are key signs. It can spread rapidly during warm, wet weather.

Other Diseases:

  • Leaf Spots: These unsightly brown or black spots on leaves are usually caused by fungal spores or bacteria. While not usually fatal, severe cases can weaken the tree.
  • Canker Diseases: These cause sunken, dead areas on branches and trunks. Cankers can ooze sap and eventually girdle the branch, leading to dieback.
