[80] – Part 3: Mulching Tips: How to Keep Your Trees Healthy All Year

5. Adjust Mulching Based on Season

While mulching can benefit trees year-round, seasonal adjustments can optimize its effectiveness:

  • Spring: Spring is a great time to refresh mulch as the soil warms up. Adding a fresh layer of mulch will help retain moisture from spring rains and block weeds during the growing season.
  • Summer: In hot weather, mulch protects tree roots from extreme temperatures. Check for dryness and water the mulch layer if it becomes too dry, as this can reduce its moisture-retention ability.
  • Fall: Fall mulching helps insulate the soil and roots as the weather cools. Leaves and pine needles work well in the fall, as they decompose and add organic matter to the soil over winter.
  • Winter: A thicker layer of mulch can provide added insulation to protect against frost heaving and temperature fluctuations. Just ensure that the mulch isn’t compacted or piled against the trunk.

6. Watch for Signs of Over-Mulching

While mulch is beneficial, too much can have the opposite effect. Over-mulching, often called “volcano mulching,” occurs when mulch is piled too high around the trunk, creating a cone shape. Here are some issues associated with over-mulching:

  • Root Suffocation: Excessive mulch can compact and restrict oxygen flow to roots.
  • Waterlogged Soil: Thick mulch layers can trap moisture and lead to root rot.
  • Pest and Disease Attraction: Piled-up mulch provides a perfect habitat for pests and fungal diseases that can harm your tree.

To avoid these issues, check the mulch depth annually and keep it at 2-4 inches.
