[19] – The Mighty Mockernut Hickory: A 4-Part Tribute

Towering over the Eastern and Central woodlands, the Mockernut hickory (Carya tomentosa) stands as a testament to strength, resilience, and enduring beauty. This magnificent tree, with its deep roots and soaring branches, has woven itself into the fabric of North American landscapes and lives for centuries. Join us on a journey to explore the Mockernut hickory in four captivating parts:

Part 1: A Titan of the Woodlands

  • A Towering Presence: Reaching heights of up to 100 feet, the Mockernut hickory commands attention with its broad, rounded crown and sturdy trunk. Its rough, gray bark, etched with shallow furrows, speaks of its age and weathered wisdom.
  • Leaves of Distinction: Come spring, the tree unfurls its compound leaves, each composed of 5-9 glossy leaflets. Their undersides boast a velvety covering of fine hairs, earning the Mockernut hickory its alternate name – the “woolly-butt hickory.” As autumn arrives, the leaves transform into a fiery spectacle, painting the landscape in hues of golden yellow, orange, and fiery red.
  • Nuts for Squirrels (and More): In late fall, the Mockernut hickory produces its coveted bounty – the hickory nut. Enclosed in a thick, four-lobed husk, the nut itself is small and somewhat challenging to crack. However, squirrels, raccoons, and other wildlife consider it a delicacy, while humans prize its unique, sweet flavor.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week.
